We discuss the boundeness of the maximal Bochner-Riesz means for abstract self-adjoint operators as well as elliptic operators. Applications Include elliptic operators on compact manifolds, the harmonic oscillator, radial Schrodinger operators withe inverse square potentials, sub-Laplacians on homogeneous groups, and Schrodinger operators on asymptotically conic manifolds.
