In early 1980s, Paneitz discovered a fourth order operator with bi-Laplacian as leading term, behaving similarly under conformal transformation of metrics as the conformal Laplacian operator. This operator and its associatedQ-curvature was successfully used by Chang-Gursky-Yang in dimension four during 1990s. We will discuss progress in other dimensions made through the past several years and some new problems emerged along the way.
